National Wallace Monument

Of particular note is the National Wallace Monument, a 220-feet tower built in memory of Sir William Wallace, a key leader in the Wars of Scottish Independence. I hope you remember “Braveheart” and Mel Gibson playing this role.

You have to climb a 246-step spiral staircase to reach the top of the monument. You can pause at three levels. And appreciate the wonderful exhibits pertaining to William Wallace, other Scottish heroes and the battle of Stirling in the Hall of Arms, the Hall of Heroes and the Royal Chamber.

The final stop is the Crown Spire itself. One look from here and you’ll understand why Stirling has been called the “Gateway to the Highlands” with sweeping vistas across ancient battlefields, the meandering River Forth, and rolling Highland foothills that stretch endlessly toward the horizon.
