Leeds International Film Festival

November 6 - November 23

Leeds holds a special place in film history, being the birthplace of the world’s first films, created in 1888 by Louis Le Prince. Today, it stands as a prominent national centre for film culture due to Leeds International Film Festival. The city boasts a vibrant mix of historic and modern cinemas, year-round film festivals, unique screenings at iconic venues, and a thriving community of film enthusiasts and creators. With four universities and colleges offering dedicated film programmes, and as the home of Channel 4 and Screen Yorkshire, Leeds plays a key role in the UK’s film and television industry—supporting both production and emerging talent.

Leeds Film champions film culture through a variety of festivals, screenings, and educational projects held throughout the year. Backed by the British Film Institute, Leeds Film operates under Arts, Events and Venues (AEV) at Leeds City Council and is based in the historic Leeds Town Hall. It runs three major annual film festivals and a host of ongoing film-related initiatives that enrich the city’s cultural landscape.
